Stock and Bone Broth…. What’s the Difference?!

One of the questions we’re asked most frequently is: what’s the difference between regular broth and bone broth?

In order to answer this question, we usually ask what the customer is referring to when they’re talking about broth. Most often, they’re referring to shelf stable tetra pack broth that is mass produced, widely distributed and rhymes with “shambles”. The first thing to consider when examining the difference between the two products is the ingredients! The ingredients listed on the back of the tetra packs look a little something like this:

For comparison’s sake, here’s the pack of Borderland Food Co’s chicken bone broth package:

There are three glaring differences between the above labels:

1) The ingredients

The ingredients in any true bone broth should not only be easily recognizable, they should be ingredients that you would be able to find in your own kitchen (depending on how well stocked your kitchen is, of course!). You’ll also notice that all of our ingredients are organic.

2) Frozen vs shelf stable

Bone broth is freshest when it’s frozen. The best bone broth is found in the freezer section because there are no preservatives added! It’s as close to homemade as you can possibly find!

3) NUTRIENTS NUTRIENTS NUTRIENTS!

Finally, we obviously need to consider what nutrients we’re getting from bone broth versus shelf stable stock! Bone broth is nutrient dense and has been used for centuries as a healing elixir because of it’s ability to heal from the inside, out. All of the nutrients in bone broth are extracted from the bones during the cooking process…. notice that “bones” aren’t even listed as an ingredient in shelf stable stock for ramen!

There it is in a nutshell! Bone broth is an amazing superfood that is a fantastic alternative to shelf stable stock! It contains natural ingredients, tons of nutrients and should never contain preservatives.
